Wandering with a camera, taking long walks, searching for a unique space between the objective and the subjective, the illusory and the real. I am drawn to the transformation of familiar places, hidden back alleys, and traces of human presence within the urban landscape. In Camera Lucida, Roland Barthes writes: “Photography has been, and is still, tormented by the ghost of Painting…” As a painter, I find this idea positive, because painting, photography, and film share one essential element: the search for light. The scarcity of light at night gives rise to high-contrast scenes, deep shadowy silhouettes, mystery, solitude, melancholy, tension, and anticipation.
